Santa María Cathedral
Santa María Cathedral

In the heart of the old town of Vitoria-Gasteiz we find the Cathedral of Santa Maria.
The cathedral was built at the end of the thirteenth century and the construction was completed in the fourteenth century.
With a typical Gothic style of the time, it was built as a church-fortress, forming part of the defense of the city and using its tower as a surveillance post.

Under the curious title of "Open for works". The cathedral offers an interesting guided tour of the entire temple to see from its foundation to the incredible restoration work carried out in the place.

In addition, it is possible to visit the statue of the writer Ken Follet, because the cathedral was the inspiration for his novel The Pillars of the Earth.
